The 9th 24Blue Rail Action Day ended today: a two-day common action organized by RAILPOL - the European network of railway police forces - aimed at preventing railway crime, and in particular copper-cable theft from railway lines.

The Italian Railway Police took part in the common action with 1,606 officers at 594 train stations and onboard 1,890 trains. During the operation, random screening was carried out on 3,768 passengers and 65 people were arrested or reported to the judicial authority.

As regards copper crime, the police checked 280 deposits of ferrous materials and carried out 234 controls along the railway lines, seizing more than 9,000 kilos of copper and over 10 kilos of other metals of illicit origin. 17 people were charged with copper theft and receiving of stolen goods.

The Rail Action Day, which saw the participation of the 16 RAILPOL countries, was intended to show unity and cooperation among railway police in Europe.

Also the USA, as a RAILPOL associate country, took part in the initiative organizing a law enforcement exercise called Rail Safe: Ensuring US railway security.
