As a boy Luca Verdecchia used to play soccer in the youth teams of Fermana and Ancona, already showing his talent as a sprinter. He ran his first
race, the 400 m, at the Italian Youth National Championships. He started off at full speed and kept the lead all through the race, until he fell to
the ground 100 meters from the finish. He got up and completed the lap.
In 1997 he won his first Italian title in the junior 60 m indoor. Luca joined the police sports group "Fiamme Oro" in 1999 and has represented Italy in the 4x100 relay team many times.
