Saving the lives of more than two thousands people. This is what the Traffic Police aim to achieve by 2020. This commitment will be formalized today during the workshop "The action plan of the Traffic Police: A European commitment", which is taking place at the National Police Academy in Rome.

During the event, planned as part of the activities of the Italian Presidency of the EU Council, the new objectives identified by the European Road Safety Charter will also be presented.

Along with the Traffic Police, also the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Anas (Italian Roads and Motorways National Agency), Aiscat (Italian Association of Toll Motorway Operators), Anci (National Association of Italian Municipalities), the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission and the Rome University Sapienza will take part in the project.

They will adopt a common strategy, with a view to improving road safety education and training of road users, but also strengthening traffic law enforcement. They also aim at improving the safety of infrastructure and vehicles, promoting the use of modern technologies and improving emergency services and assistance after a car accident, as well as protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

All these initiatives will improve road safety to accomplish a specific goal by 2020: saving 2,020 human lives so as to reduce the number of people killed by road accidents by 50%.

The European commitment is clearly expressed under the slogan "Together we are road safety".

The panel discussion, which will be moderated by La Repubblica journalist Vincenzo Borgomeo, will be attended by Roberto Sgalla, Director of Traffic Police, Railway Police, Communication Police and the Special Units of the National Police; Pietro Ciucci, Anas President; Paolo Pierantoni, Aiscat Vice President; Sergio Dondolini, General Director for Road Safety of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport; Maria Teresa Sanz Villegas, from DG for Transport and Mobility of the European Commission; Antonio Ragonesi, from ANCI International Relations and Cooperation/Security infrastructure and civil protection, culture and sport; Annamaria Giannini, professor of the Rome University Sapienza, Department of Psychology.
