Tispol summit, that is, the summit of the European Traffic Police Network, will take place today at the Italian Police Academy in Rome.

The event is part of the programme of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Deputy Police Chief Alessandro Marangoni will be in attendance. "CarGo" is the title of the conference, which will be centered around three thematic meetings.

Tispol organizes workshops and study meetings for all the network's members, drafts joint papers on particular aspects of road safety and arranges one week long operations to be carried out simultaneously by the various traffic enforcement authorities during the calendar year throughout Europe.

The results to be achieved with these thematic campaigns were established on the basis of the most alarming conducts for road safety: first of all the three "big killers" namely, speeding, drink driving, and failing to wear seatbelts. Driving under the influence of drugs and irregularities in the transportation of people and goods will also be strongly tackled.

The final goal is obviously the one set by the European Union, that is, zero road deaths by 2020. An ambitious goal considering that the number of road fatalities and road accidents worldwide is 1.2 million per year with over 50 million injuries, while at European level the figure is 28,126 deaths and 1,432,235 injuries in 2012 only.
